The Amazin’ Mets Foundation and Delta Air Lines have partnered on the Ya Gotta Read! program to help foster a love of reading in students. We want children to be excited to read, and we hope the appeal of the Mets and the potential to win prizes will help make them lifelong readers.
Ya Gotta Read! will launch on Monday, February 23 to coincide with the start of Mets Spring Training and will last for six weeks. The goal is for each child to read 20 minutes every weeknight (Monday-Friday) during the program. The more minutes the children read, the more prizes they will earn!
HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS:
• Each student will receive a Mets folder containing a reading log and a baseball-themed scorecard which will show the prizes students can earn as they read.
• Parents will be responsible for initialing their child’s reading log indicating which book they read and how many minutes they read for. Once signed by the parent, your student will thenhand in their reading log to you. There will be teachers assigned to the grade who will collect the data from you and input the data into our tracking spreadsheet.
• Students will read a certain number of minutes to advance around the bases with the goal of hitting a home run and reading for 600 minutes.
• Once a student reads enough minutes to reach a base, they will be rewarded with a prize to encourage them to read more and get to the next base. The teachers assigned to the grade will hand out the prizes.
